WORK HISTORY 

Jun 2014-Present                  AASKI TECHNOLOGIES and BAE SYSTEMS, System Administrator, Aberdeen, MD

·   Became the primary system administrator for the Tier 1 portion of the EKMS, a key management system that runs on a few Windows 2008 domains, Solaris 10 servers, and VAX/VMS servers.

 

·   Demonstrated capability to proactively monitor system configurations and audit and event logs; tested all the OSes and networking software; monitored and developed procedures for the backups of the servers.

 

·   Ran quarterly IAVA patches for Solaris and Oracle, and tested the application after each patch; work directly with Oracle to resolve various hardware issues; looked after cron jobs on Solaris machine that maintain the application and log files; monitor the KG250 tunnels that serve our customers and set up a special one for NSA; set up network taps so that we could use Wireshark to gather network traffic data.

 

·   Became familiar with some old hardware that handles encryption and maintenance of hardware keys, and their interface with the Solaris and VMS systems.  Managed a couple of VAX/VMS machines that run specialized software that handles messages sent with encrypted keys.

·   Installed and maintained Battelle’s own FAST environment, which is a web application that runs with IIS and SQL Server in a Windows environment.

 

·   Began creation of a cloud environment consisting of CentOS and Windows servers for Battelle to use to promote their applications.

 

·   Maintained and migrated Battelle’s own START environment, which is written in Java and handles a huge database of PDF documents for perusal.

 

·   Worked with a contract with the US Army in a sustainment role, administering groups of Windows servers, Red Hat servers, and Solaris machines in local network, at Ft. Monmouth in New Jersey, and at DISA.

 

·   Coordinated among contractors and civilians with different needs and security restrictions to keep the current PDM system working while providing multiple upgrade paths.

 

·   Administered a Windows 2003 Apache Tomcat server that hosts a KONFIG application that interfaces with an Oracle 9 database on a Solaris 10 platform

 

·   Coordinated the transfer of CBRNIAC roles off a Windows domain to disparate environments in different locations, and maintaining them at their new locations.

 

·   Worked out all the Information Assurance (i.e. security issues) with both the production KONFIG system and its potential replacement

 

·   Worked with the Aberdeen Proving Ground networking group to get approval for new software packages that have not run in a government environment before.

·   Administered multiple heterogeneous networks containing machines running Sun/Solaris, Windows Server 2000/2003, Windows 2000/XP, Snap Servers, Red Hat & SuSE Linux, and HP-UX.  These were used for testing our satellite software, after which the software and machines were replicated in production.

 

·   Took on the maintenance of additional hardware and software for the commercial group.  This included similar platforms, but also IRIX on an Indigo machine.

 

·   Maintained the communication among all these machines, using Samba, NFS, Veritas, Windows shares

 

·   Conducted performance testing using both Windows and Solaris, with special tests involving NAS and RAID configurations.

 

·   Wrote and maintained shell and Perl scripts to perform installations and maintenance.

 

·   Received a secret clearance with the federal government.

·   Served as sole administrator of a network of Sun/Solaris machines, installed and upgraded scientific applications, migrated users to a Mac OSX environment, then took on a more Windows-based responsibility, configuring Windows 2003 Servers and performing as the primary point of contact for any computing issues for the college.

 

·   Set up Red Hat and Ubuntu Linux machines for both myself and University of Delaware students

 

·   Evaluated new software and hardware with respect to how they might be implemented to better suit the users’ needs, taking into account new features and the costs involved

 

·   Streamlined an NIS+ environment containing various levels of Solaris that I upgraded to versions 9 and 10

 

·   Managed a Sun sendmail mail server that stored and forwarded email for half our college, then migrated all these users to either UD’s Mirapoint server or to Microsoft Exchange

 

·   Helped researchers migrate their Sun needs to a Mac OSX network consisting of a couple of servers and several clients, some running VMware Fusion software

 

·   Converted all Sun applications to NFS mounted partitions so that they only had to be maintained in one area; assigned resources among various Suns and Macs so that they could share Terabytes of data

 

·   Wrote Perl, sed, awk, and shell scripts to perform periodic administration functions

·   Worked my way up from an entry-level GS-7 to a more managerial position where I oversaw a contract regarding the administration of a heterogenous UNIX environment that served everyone from the scientific community to administrative users of applications such as Oracle and e-mail service.

 

·   Administered a series of VAXes that served the needs of the entire laboratory, and migrated their users to a SunOS environment

 

·   Managed the DNS and Cyberguard firewall for our laboratory; coordinated the port configuration to cooperate with the Base firewall and with directive that spanned over three other bases

 

·   Provided direction regarding a Unix maintenance contract where I was chief advisor to a group of contractors that handled a series of Solaris and AIX machines
